Good day gamers,
Baldur’s Gate: To continue writing about my Dremation 2020 experience, the next event that came up on my schedule was a D&D 5.0 Edition game that I was Game Mastering at 2pm on Saturday. This was a little bit of an experimental game for me. I wanted to create an on-going campaign instead of the ever popular convention one-shot. I tried this at previous Dreamations and DexCons with the Twilight 2000 RPG system with limited success. I thought that by switching to D&D, a much more popular system, that I had a higher chance of success.
Here are the changes that I experimented with:
- The campaign sessions would be successive at different conventions and would have the same characters, but potentially different players. So, if I run this at DexCon 2020, it will be the same characters that played this time, but possibly new players.
- This is the Baldur’s Gate campaign that starts off with Abdul Adrian giving a speech in the Wide on Founder’s Day. I placed the characters withing that crowd and not knowing each other. More interestingly, the characters started out as essentially civilians and Level 0.
- Before began, I had a list of ten potential civilians of different careers that they could have played. Each one of those civilians had different levels of information printed on them. Prestige, Wealth, and how much they were known in the Upper, Lower, and/or Outer City.
- The players chose their characters and then we did a little background work on them to include if they started with any ‘Magic’ or any special item that they brought with them on Founder’s Day. The ‘Magic’ was pretty cool to choose. It didn’t have to be a spell, but maybe a special ability. The players were very creative in this and it was fun.
- Then events happened in the Wide, the players reacted and after the events were over, the citizens of Baldur’s Gate became very interested in the players and they formed a group to continue investigating the rest of the scenario.
- I handed out notebooks to the players and they filled them out with anything they wanted to pass onto the next player that may play their character.
Overall, this was a very successful experiment. I got a lot of compliments and I’m looking forward to the next session at DexCon. At that session, I plan on having the players actually create 1st Level Characters based on what was learned and acquired during this first initial session.
I would love any comments, suggestions, or feedback about my ideas. Looking forward to DexCon 2020.
Post Timing: I’ve decided to release this posts at 3:33pm each day that I post, so that you can look forward to them. I’ve chosen that time, because I like the number 3. 🙂 If you have any feedback or ideas that would be better, please comment below or send me an email at dave@gamemastergames.com.
Dave’s Daily Dispatch: I like this name a lot, since it has some military connections with me as I’m a veteran, but as of right now, I’m not posting daily. I do play on doing so eventually. If you have any other suggestions for the name, let me know. I don’t know a synonym for ‘Occasional’. “Dave’s Occasional Dispatch” just doesn’t roll of the tongue very well. LOL
Tonight’s Game Night: Going to get a chance to play something with some friends tonight. Could be Inis, could be 878 Vikings, could be Risk Legacy, Wingspan or more…I guess time will tell. Look them up on BoardGameGeek.com.
Short Format: I have a lot to say, but not trying to have these blogs too long, so I’m keeping them short and I’ll continue with stuff the next day.
Over Coffee: Join me and Rich tomorrow morning, Monday, and every other Monday on Over Coffee on Twitch where we will discuss games, conventions, and almost any other topic while we enjoy a hot cup of coffee at 6:30am!!! Yes, that early! Listen in while you are getting ready for work. Join chat and ask us some question. See you then!
Thanks for reading. Give yourself 100 XP and until we meet again, across the internet, keep your mice dry, your keyboards ready to comment, and your gaming communities strong!
